About Santiago:
Santiago, also known as Santiago de los Caballeros, is the second most populous city in the Dominican Republic and the third in the Caribbean area. In addition to being the capital of the Province of Santiago, it stands out as the metropolis of the Cibao region. With a population of approximately 771,748 inhabitants according to the National Statistical Office of the Dominican Republic and 852,361 inhabitants in the metropolitan area, it is the second largest municipality in the country and the main metropolitan center in the northern region or Cibao.
Located in the Cibao Valley, about 155 km northwest of Santo Domingo and at an average altitude of 178 meters above sea level, Santiago covers a total area of 612 km2. The city has a rich history, dating back to 1515 when it was moved from the banks of the Yaque del Norte River to the Site of Jacagua. The first settlers, 30 knights of the Order of Santiago el Mayor, gave it the name Santiago in honor of the Galician city Santiago de Compostela, and added “of the Thirty Knights”.
